Webolution Task # 5

Another one (Webolution Task) bites the dust!
I'm glad that I did this task because I didn't know until today, just a few minutes ago, that the new OPAC even had a "book bag" feature. I NEVER noticed that there was a check box in front of an item title. What a time saver, as both a MCPLD patron and staff member! Yahoo! Happy Holidays! See you in the next week or so.

social networking webolution

First, years ago I got a MySpace account, because a friend encouraged me to join, and now I just delete the emails saying that someone is interested or has looked at my site. Someday when I have time I'll just delete that account... if that is possible!
Later, more friends encouraged me to again join the 21st century and get on FaceBook. At first I enjoyed it, but now every time I go on the site it sucks the life out of me. Who has the time to keep up with all that, especially after working all day most days of the week. I haven't even uploaded a photo of myself yet and now FaceBook is redesigned to be more about our photos. (By the way the movie about Social Networking was great, very informative and the subsequent interviews with the CEO have also been entertaining.)
I did visit all the suggested FaceBook accounts listed in our task, but from my cursory review it seems like CocaCola site is now in Spanish, and of course the link to MCPLD site has changed - it just brings you to a page to sign up/join.
This exercise will likely re-motivate me to find my password for MySpace and try and go in and delete my account, that is when I find some extra time. Not likely in the near future because the Winter Holidays are always very busy for me.....

How do I already participate in Cloud computing: Let me count the ways.
I love taking and sharing photographs of my family, friends and our trips in the great outdoors. I have 2 favorite photo sharing sites: Creative Memories Memory Manager and Shutterfly, which I use most often. Memory Manager understands the importance of photos and stores your photography on multiple sites to prevent losses if a server goes down. I like Shutterfly best because of the ease of use, (except the upload time), ability to order prints and photo books and share photos with my family and friends easily. I tried another company, that shall remain nameless, and they wanted to charge me to store my photos on their site and so far Shutterfly has remained free and continues to send me free coupons for photo books and new products. I feel reassured that if my computer crashes I have another layer of protection and backup of my precious photos.
How would cloud computing improve MCPLD services and bottom line?
Cloud computing can allow the library to focus on our mission and what we do best and only have to pay for as much storage access as we need at a given time, while still allowing that information to be shared with our patrons, thus fulfilling our core mission and allowing increased circulation.. My only concern would be ensuring stringent safety and security standards as cloud computing evolves. We've all see what has happened recently when skilled hackers gain access to crucial data both at a local and national level.
I'm off to go look at clouds....

Are we ready for the elections to be over yet?

Hello everyone (or at least Nancy Trimm!),

I scored 100 on the Webolution task for October 2010.

I'd really like to thank  Linda Ciavonne for her work in putting together this very timely LibGuide. A woman with the local League of Women Voters was very happy to learn that there was a direct link to their site from this LibGuide when she delivered the voting guides to the Orchard Mesa branch.

Lets get out there and VOTE!!
